Our ancestors probably realized very early on that gathering in groups and cooperation are essential for survival—just think of hunting, gathering various foods, or defending against predators. Therefore, we are not mistaken in saying that teamwork is as old as humanity itself. Although the goal of teamwork today is no longer survival, it has not lost any of its importance.
If we take a closer look at teamwork in the workplace, the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries resulted in new technologies and production processes, while tasks themselves became increasingly complex. Work processes emerged that were already difficult, and sometimes even impossible, to carry out alone. During this period, the importance of teamwork increased significantly, as cooperation enabled, among other things, higher production volumes, improved quality, and reduced costs, while at the same time increasing the pressure on individuals.
In certain industries, it is especially important that work processes are carried out by people who cooperate closely with one another, such as in the production of wiring harnesses, which at our company is carried out through the joint work of nearly two and a half thousand employees.
However, in order to speak of teamwork and not merely a group of people working in the same place, it is important that we:
• communicate regularly and effectively with one another,
• take into account the opinions and experience of others,
• share knowledge and ideas with others,
• focus on collective goals rather than individual recognition,
• take responsibility for completed tasks,
• remain flexible and adaptable,
• approach one another with trust, and
• support each other in difficult moments.
